Media and Digital Literacy

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Have you ever wondered how the models in magazines get such clear skin? Have you ever wondered why there are so many commercials on TV? Have you ever wondered how the media makers create special effects in videos and on film? You’ll find out the answer to these questions and more in this pre-requisite class to all other classes offered in Media Studies. Students must PASS Media and Digital Literacy BEFORE they can take Media Production—the next course in the Media Studies series.

Students are preparing to leave high school and continue in their future.  Students are expected to be responsible for their own success.

All class work and assignments can be found within Canvas. All students have access to this using their school login information. Assignments, due dates, extra materials and information are available on this site.

We will cover a variety of media related topics in order to expose students to media and how it exists in everyday life.

Topics include, but are not limited to:

    • 5 Concepts and Questions of Media Literacy
    • News-Print/Broadcast
    • Logo/Branding
    • Body Image in the Media
    • Film Creation
    • Advertising—Toys, Alcohol, Tobacco and other products
    • Politics
    • 20 shots story
    • Basic Filming techniques

Note:  The class has been designed so that all assignments and projects can be completed during the class time that is allotted.

All assessments will take the form of projects or essay formats. This will allow students to express how the concepts they have learned apply to ever day life. No “tests” will given.
